Lets try to talk some poker
Well, it was a long night last night and after me posting that I was not a fan of low buy in re buys it was a sure thing that I would go deep. I ran quite well for the first hour and a half getting my stack to about 25k. For the next hour it was touch and go if I crashed and burned or not, my chip stack went down to 9k at one point. This was due to one poor bluff on the river (10K) and letting others hit there three outers by not betting the flop or turn. This was because I was trying to play small pot and not risk my game on one hand.
Somehow I finished this period with about 40k in chips. For the next 3 hours I was card dead, I managed to keep my chip stack intact (ish) with the odd bluff and the fact that I had a serial caller to my left. He would raise or push all in if he had hit but fold on the river if he had missed. A key point came when there were still around 200 runners left and I had 50k. I found QQ. I was watching Neil Channing on sky sports 4 (the bounty thing, and he was very good I would add) and he had just commented on someone’s play (5 handed though) with QQ. They had called a three bet raise and had to fold later in the hand because the flop was not good. He criticised the QQ play for not re raising a point which I agreed with at the time. I had a three bet raise form under the gun, I was in mid pos and decided just to call. The next player then raised 10k, the table folds round to me, what would you do?? Well I just called (left me with 30k ish) I thought is was a squeeze play with Ak AQ. The flop brings an ace, I check and I am faced with a bet for my tournament life, so I fold. The reason I am talking about this hand is because on reflection I am happy with the way I played this hand, I am sure the 10k raiser did have AK and while I did commit over 25% of my chips into the pot I did “get away” from the QQ still in the game. (rabbit cam showed a K for the turn so I was feeling better with the fold). The best hand I played after this was finding AK of clubs on the button (normally this would have been a no brainier all in). There was a raise of 3bb followed by a all in before the action came to me (this was still before the points), normally my chips (with the small stack I had at this time) would have been all in but I folded. The original raiser called to see a race between AA and JJ (which the JJ won). After that hand I layed down AQ, multiple low pocket pairs to suspicious raises and rereaise (all of which I would have normally played). I think what I am saying about my play last night its not the hands that I won but the hands I layed down or play “small ball” which gave me most pleasure, The only mistake (if you can call it that) I made was the hand that knocked me out. I get KK on the button, the hand is folded round to me I 3 bet and the big blind goes all in, my chips cannot get in fast enough. He hits his two outer and I am out, I am pretty sure if I had pushed all in instead of 3 betting the big blind would have folded. But we live and learn! |
yes
I,m glad i stayed up to watch the final table, oh and please god, one day I'd like the luck the fella that won the tournament had .. fair play to him he was brave with some of his calls and bets but every time he went in behind he got lucky, and in fairness anyone who wins a tournament in a field this size has more than their fair share of 'flips' along the way o:D
Watching Herbie was fun because you knew if he ever 'called' an all-in bet he would have a massive hand :loveme: Mind you , what he had when he shoved, I've no idea, because most of the time he was getting respect and they would pass or if called he was good or got good 8-P Never before have i sat up till 1 00 am watching someone else play with work to go to the next day o:D Still was worth it just to rail our Captain .... yeaaaaaaaaaaa :clap: |

I watched Channing on Sky poker too....and to be honest its a shame they dont have him on every week....Always very good info and some really funny stories..
I was sick as a pig last night as when we started i was on a really tight table and my pkt...AA and KK never got the rewards they deserved.. Then the cock up at the break didnt do me any favours (3.5k chips)...But got right back into it and i had about the same stack as Herbie when i pushed all in with A3 on a flop of A 3 ? .....Unfortunatly the chip leader at the time (80k) was on my table and decided it was worth 18k to spike the flush with his pkt cards 10 Q hearts on a two heart flop.... He hit and if i would have held then i would have had near on 45k and then would have fancied myself to score well... Next week will be a different kettle of fish as its ONE chance only... Great stuff Herbie and we are off and running... |

I laughed when'Mickey147' wrote in the chat ....
The Herbinator is back !!:loveme: |
interesting take on last nights game herbie, I often find I get my best results when playing a similar game to the one you describe, I had to suffer a dodgey internet connection last night, which altered my play a bit,I went out on a draw hand,I planned not to play these sort of cards or hands, play tight and survive in comp to last 100 or so and then risk chips ,was in a decent position with 10k+ after first break, when plan went out the window when I hit a nut flush draw and possible straight draw, didnt want to play hand but I did, this is my failing in poker, tried to take hand down after flop, which makes my play acceptable in my mind, altho losing it did in effect take me out of comp, which makes it a bad play, will try and control myself next week.In these comps think your best not seeing flop unless you willing to put all your chips in play, until later stages when big blinds and antes come into play.not to say your only move is all-in but a guide on which hole cards to play if that makes sense.

OK you knew you were in the hand with the 'chippie' 18k vs 80k, but once that flop has come down you've done nothing wrong !! You think your ahead (and you are) you've shoved all-in and I would have done the same because you cant slow play against the big stack here, if he had flopped a 'set' OH unlucky but also if he's gambled with implied odds then that's OK as well ... Thing is with poker, it always hurts when a player gets lucky on the river but when a player has 'the power' of a big stack they also have the added advantage to play a bigger range from position .. Some either call or push and bully, '3bet' re-raise, 'check-raise', 'float' the flop or turn or even the river ... All this jargon is a part of the modern game. To me in your position , I'd have done the same and so too probably would have Doyle Brunson and Stu Ungar . As Doyle Brunson said, " The key to 'No Limit' poker is to put a player to a decision for ALL his chips" 8-P You did nothing wrong, in fact as Dell Boy would say, "One day Rodney" !!!8-P |
Any thoughts on next tourney, I see its 2nd chance with an add-on,I would normally start with extra chips and use 2nd chance straight away, but Im thinking it maybe best to keep this in reserve just incase I bomb early, think most will take the chips early and Im not sure if there is any advantage in it for this comp.
|
I wont be starting with the extra chips, it leaves me with one "big gamble hand". if that loses I am back in and playing tight until the add on.
|
Im leaning towards that too herbie,it makes sense to keep it in reserve, otherwise you will be in trouble if a big hand comes along and you get bumped by the poker gods. gl
|
2nd chance + add-on
Definitely cant be starting with a double stack, you'll end up playing too tight and then get them all-in with A's and get busted .. and then no way back to take the add-on ..:-C
However, this sort of structure it's worth keeping an eye open on the clock, if there's just 2 or 3 minutes left before the break and you have under the starting stack, I would then take the re-buy and go make a cup of tea, dont even look at the computer for that 2 or 3 minutes,(dont want to get busted now).. Then at the break take the add-on if required giving you a decent stack for the main game proper (start then is a freezeout) .. The other thing with only playing just the one starting stack is, it gives you a slight advantage for playing a few more wider range hands in position, without the 'scare' factor in the back of your mind.. :loveme: Good luck us o:D |

Poker players are thick, the rebuy period has ended if you have less than 3000 chips you can either re buy for 2500 chips, add on for 3500 chips or both. I have just seen two players on my table take the re buy rather than the add on costing themselves 1000 chips. sigh
|
ok
So i'm in, had to take some risks down to 500 so took the re-buy (another ticket lol)
Up to 5 k then break, so add-on now i can settle down with 7k to start the main event ... grief I dont need it, get enough from her indoors here and now Ladbrokes o:D |
