Longest Rugby thread ever, then let me add my 2 peneth....

I thought the refereeing was awful - Its easy to say as the Lions lost, but there is a real danger that these Lions tours may be shelved. The Springboks should have had a man sent off for gouging, but instead was yellow carded. Like football, this means the ref has dealt with it, so the Associations cannot impose the 6 month ban they should.

There were some obstructions against Lions, but there were also instances of this when the boks scored, so again, as with Chelsea this year, some interfering, or sub-standard referreeing effects the outcome of a match.

The Lions have merchandising of shirts etc, and get a proportion of the ticket sales, but they only receive a part share of TV rights, as these are negotiated and agreed with the host countries, and its the smaller share. There are more and more going as part of the tour, the tours are longer than ever, and all in all... its not profitable.

I did hear that if they did not get a result in South Africa.... this could be the last tour.

Time will tell.

Lee

you are never going to be sent off in the first min of a game (which i think when the gouging happend). As far as the lion’s tours being scrapped I would like to feel some empathy with true rugby union fans but I feel that the sport lost out when , after England won the world cup the sports leagues and major cup competitions did not end up being shown live on terrestrial television. Very short term thinking! I truly believe that if at this time the major stakeholders of the game had taken the “less profitable” but more watched route to the TV market then we would have a serious contender for football as the nations “game”.

Tony2005 June 27th, 2009 18:50

Now rugby isnt one of my specialist subjects but.....you see this in football a lot when a player makes a foul and the referee just gives a free kick...The commontator says....if he hadnt been booked earlier he would have got a yellow card there....:h?:

Surely a bookable foul is the same no matter what point of the game its commited in or regardless of the player already being on a card..? :brains:

As for sport being shown on terestrial tv......i sometimes wonder who has the say how the licence payers money is spent...?

Just taking the BBC into consideration ..... the live sport has all but disappered off these channels with racing being one of the sufferers...

I believe ALL Britains teams in sports like Football, Rugby and Cricket (mainly England) should have all their games live on BBC......

Skys main source of income comes from their sports channels and thats why they throw millions at sport and most of their other channels just show the same programme 5 times a week .

Take Setanta for example......£9.99 per month and some good sports channels with of course Racing UK......They go pop mainly because they cant get the numbers of subscribers due to Sky charging so much that people just cant afford another tenner here and there every month....and then Racing Uk says dont worry we will still be on air but will be charging £20 per month.....the same as we did in 2004.....:eek!:

Dont they realise were in a recession and also nowdays you can watch all the races live on the net for as little as a £1 bet.....:h?:

The BBC are too involved with making programmes where the public have to phone in and vote or pay too much to people like Jonathan Ross and that other waste of money Graham Norton..

Get rid of the overpaid nobodys and let the public have more of a say in what the BBC buy with our money......:scribe:

Tony2005 June 27th, 2009 19:01

Haha....

Just turned on BBC1 and there he is "mincing" around......

Graham Norton.....o:D

With a load of tv wannabes who will make complete fools of themselves just to get 10 mins of tv fame....:eek!:
