Golf....The British Open 2009

Thursday sees the start of the 2009 British Open Golf from Turnbury....

All four days can be seen on the BBC and in my opinion this is one event where they get the coverage spot on........:h?:

Just would like to know your thoughts on this and five players who you think are worth a punt.....

No Phil Mickelson this year but Tigers back.......8-P

Thanks PT......thats a good site.

Hopefully betweeen us golfers we will get the winner....:brains:

Anyone with a BOYLESPORTS account can back e/w with SEVEN places....:eek!:

Part-Timer July 13th, 2009 16:55

Here is my 5 to win and 2 to play with at big prices.

Ernie Els trading at 50, 15/2 top 5.
6 top 5's this century, had a poor year by his standards but playing a little better lately.

Anthony Kim trading at 55, 9/1 top5.
7th last year as a rookie. A certain Major winner sometime in his career.

Lee Westwood trading at 34, 13/2 top 5.
Getting back to where he was a few years ago. Keeps the ball in play just needs that bit of luck.

Andres Romero trading at 170, 21/1 top 5.
Huge price for someone that has had 2 top 5's in 3 attempts. Not at his best at the moment but may bounce back to form.

Steve Stricker trading at 50, 9/1 top 5.
Two top 10's last twice, usually very consistent

My 2 mad outsiders are Carl Petterson @ 930 and Freddie Jacobson @ 640, free bet if they make a decent start

Tony2005 July 13th, 2009 17:00

Nice one PT....i will be having a study tomorrow evening...

Westwood is playing well but i thought yesterday he was poor over the last 9 when he had a great chance of winning...

But you always get a good run for your money backing him and im sure there will be an opportunity of laying off at some point.....

taylormade July 14th, 2009 21:45

the rough is shocking at turnberry this year and im hoping the wind blows and the rain falls which will allow graham storm to win the open at 250/1.
ross fisher at 40/1 will probably be leading by 10 shots when his wife goes into labour and he flies off for the birth .
ben curtis at 66/1 likes the links courses and won before.
k j choi is straight and at 125/1 could be a suprise contender.
soren hansen at 100/1,theres always a scandi knocking about and good value.

my main bet is graham storm , if the weather is atrocious hes a 33/1 shot and he been playing well lately, altho his recent results dont back this up.

probably pop down to turnberry on saturday and see whats going on,played there last year, stayed in the fancy white hotel on the hilltop, pure luxury, wont mention my golf score,i lost 2 balls on one hole, good luck all.

Tony2005 July 15th, 2009 16:05

Well after a lot of.....

studying heres my selections..:t:

BEN CURTIS (66/1 )...Loves links golf and especially The Open Championship....Not the most exciting player to watch but will revel in these conditions and a top six finish would do us for the e/w momey....

IAN POULTER (40/1)..until recently not a player i liked but over the last 12 months i think his game has come on a bundle and he can now be a serious challenger in the majors and was a shade unlucky to finish runner up in the states earlier in the season. If he can keep the ball straight i think he has a chance.

JUSTIN LEONARD (125/1)..not a bloke i like after his antics in the ryder cup a few years back but this is betting and not a popularity contest so i think he will give us a good run for our cash and an e/w bet is advised.

NICK DOHERTY (175/1)..heres a player who has played most of his golf on links courses and won the Dunhill a few years back....Could well suprise at big e/w odds this week...

COLIN MONTGOMERIE (275/1)..Now i know what you are all thinking...:h?:....but i still think theres one big performance left in Monty and on a course where he had his best ever Open result this might just be the week....For sure if he starts ok his price will plummet so could lay off for a free bet ....E/W value and who knows maybe this could be the biggie....:eek!:

Tiger as usual is short (5/2) and i always feel its worth taking him on in majors...

Harrington (40/1) woefully out of form and cant be backed at any price.

Sergio (33/1) deserves a major but i just think his putting here wont be good enough and a place maybe the best he can ask for...

Anyway ALL FOUR DAYS are live on BBC starting with tomorrows first round at 9am.

Hopefully come Sunday evening we will be quids in......:flowers:

Part-Timer July 15th, 2009 17:24

I had managed not to back Monty then Torrance and you go and tip him, so I've had a fiver on at 380. Under par first round I will be buying him back o:D

Part-Timer July 17th, 2009 12:24

Looking for some value this morning. John Senden -4 trading @ 85 so had a tenner on, bogeyed his first 5 holes :'D:-C

Tony2005 July 17th, 2009 12:29

:eek!::eek!:

Ive just had a tenner on CINK at 33/1 (365)....only 29/1 on the exchanges..

Also another £5 on Justin Leanord at 125/1.......:brains:

Just about breaking even at the moment.....

Poulters just made his first birdie of the tournement on 17.......Com'on Poults.....o:Do:D

Tony2005 July 17th, 2009 12:33

Part-Timer July 17th, 2009 12:41

o:Do:Do:D.

.......after reading his selections we might see his bo***cks on Ebay though....:eek!:

Tony2005 July 18th, 2009 09:45

Think this is anyones to win now with the weather getting worse and i think the winning score maybe as low as PAR or -1 .....:brains:

Anybody at +4 or under i think can be backed and there might still be some value with players going off before 12.30pm.....

Part-Timer July 18th, 2009 09:56

Any ideas then :h?:

Tony2005 July 18th, 2009 10:03

Well this is my opinion and my book on it.......

SINGH...........6/1

GOOSEN........7/1

WESTWOOD...7/1

FISHER.........10/1

CINK............14/1

GARCIA.........14/1

VILLAGAS......20/1

LEONARD.......20/1

WATSON / MARINO / CALC......28/1

33/1 BAR.

So after working that out ive backed SINGH @ 16/1 as i see him as the best value at the moment

AND

McDOWELL e/w @ 125/1 as he plays bad conditions well.

Just my thoughts though.....:brains:

Part-Timer July 18th, 2009 10:15

The young Italian amateur is 1000/I, only +1 and went round in level par yesterday. I think I will waste another tenner o:D

He would need Tiger on his bag and the tees for the par 5s to be moved 200yds nearer the green just to make the top 25.....:brains:

As for the holiday.......Milletts do a good line in tents....:hippy:

Part-Timer July 18th, 2009 11:27

Tiger who?

Part-Timer July 18th, 2009 15:22

Had £20 at 1000, laid £22 at 886, Made a £2 profit 8-P Won't get a tent peg, never mind a tent with that.

danny twentyman July 18th, 2009 17:33

im on westwood at 33,s e.way.

taylormade July 18th, 2009 20:16

interesting day tmorro,im thinking anyone on +3 or worse is out of it,even +2 is struggling.the weather forecast for tmorro is slight winds but a good chance of showers,
cant see anyone shooting less than 67,so even if a +2 player has a good day,he end up -1 and will need atleast 12 players above him all to shoot 73,and it wont happen.
think the winner come from fisher[4/1]westwood [9/2]or goosen[11/2],think theres value in betting weekley[66/1]cabrera[40/1]mcginley[175/1]rose[125/1]mcdowell[66/1] for a place.I backed fisher at start so think i have a bit of westwood to win and back cabrera, mcdowell and mcginley each way, think mcginley could shine tmorro.

good luck all and let the best fisher win

Tony2005 July 19th, 2009 11:44

The final round.....

Even though my bets look dead and buried in the Turnberry rough im really looking forward to a stress and bet free afternoon watching the golf.....

Surely everyone whos a golf fanatic must be pulling for a TOM WATSON win....59 years old and still being able to show the best golfers around how to play a links course......:clap:....."com'on old man" as Garcia said on Friday....

The other thing that has taken my eye is what a nice bloke Ross Fisher is....

Smiles his way around the course and is very curtious with the galleries and the support he is getting.....This is great to see nowdays as there are a lot of top golfers who either dont acknowledge the gallieries or do it begrudgingly..

If Watson doesnt win hopefully ROSS FISHER will and with his wife expecting at any moment what a couple of days it would be for him....B (:B (:

Hopefully a thrilling finish is instore...

Part-Timer July 19th, 2009 12:13

My Italian Amateur is charging, 8-P, through the field. Wish I hadn't laid him off now o:D

Matt July 19th, 2009 12:45

Furyk is still a major contender. Hoping he hits low in running so i can lay some off. I have bet him in the end to win 3.5k at odds around 32 average on betfair :)

taylormade July 19th, 2009 13:22

if furyk is still in contention on the 18th tee, I'll eat my socks and tony will show his arse in fenwicks window, come on ross fisher ,
