Wednesdays Review
A review of Wednesday's action in the EFL Cup as all the big guns made it through to the fourth round. :news:
Manchester United and Manchester City both won their EFL Cup ties on Wednesday evening to set up a derby in the last 16. Goals from Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera and Marcus Rashford saw United to a 3-1 win over Northampton, who went into half-time level at 1-1 after Alex Revell's penalty. City won 2-1 against Swansea with goals from Gael Clichy and Aleix Garcia but were left with another injury worry over captain Vincent Kompany. The Belgium defender played for the first time since May but left the field and went straight down the tunnel shortly after Gylfi Sigurdsson's stoppage-time consolation goal for Swansea. Manager Pep Guardiola said afterwards: "Hopefully, it will not be a big problem. We're going to wait for the results from the doctors." The two Manchester giants were then pitted against each other in a fourth-round draw which also saw Liverpool drawn against Tottenham and Chelsea handed a short trip to West Ham's London Stadium. Spurs enjoyed a 5-0 stroll against League One Gillingham thanks to two goals from Christian Eriksen, Vincent Janssen (penalty) and Josh Onomah's first strikes for the club and one from Erik Lamela. West Ham left it very late to seal their progress, requiring a Dimitri Payet free-kick six minutes into stoppage time to see off Accrington 1-0. There were also late winners for Hull and Bristol City, who will meet in the next round. Markus Henriksen saw Hull past Stoke 2-1, having also set up Ryan Mason's equaliser after Marko Arnautovic's thumping opener. Bristol City trailed 1-0 to Fulham after Lucas Piazon's diving header, but hit back through Aaron Wilbraham and Tammy Abraham either side of Cauley Woodrow's penalty miss for the Cottagers. Southampton beat Crystal Palace 2-0, Jake Hesketh adding to Charlie Austin's penalty, while Paddy McNair's brace earned Sunderland a 2-1 win after QPR had led through Sandro. |
