Continuation betting in the modern game is known as, "The C Bet"
In the old days, before Doyle Brunson wrote Super/System, poker was a tight, conservative game. These days the opposite is true and if you're going to survive you need to arm yourself with the right moves. There's no better place to start than with the continuation bet. The continuation bet, or C-bet, is where you bet on the flop when you've missed, after raising pre-flop. It's designed to represent strength and works on the premise that your opponents will only hit about one in three flops. If you've raised pre-flop, you've already signified strength - following this up with a bet of 1/2 to 2/3 of the pot will usually drive away the opposition.

Poker is all about being unpredictable though and if you C-bet all the time, you'll quickly be unmasked and your bets will get no respect. You should be looking to C-bet approximately 70% of the time, but here are some questions to ask yourself before automatically reaching for chips.

How dangerous is the board? A flop that comes down Kc-8h-2s is unlikely to have hit anyone in a meaningful way and is perfect for a C-bet. A dangerous looking 8s-9s-10s is completely different and it's unlikely a C-bet will drive anyone off a huge draw.

Are you up against an aggressive opponent, whose check could easily signify a check-raise? The continuation bet is such a common move these days that a lot of aggressive players will check-raise whether they've got a hand or not. As with most forms of aggression, the C-bet works best on tight, passive players that just haven't got the game to play tricky. You'll also often meet people that will call what they perceive as a C-bet on the flop, but will fold to another bet on the turn. You need to identify these players as soon as possible and be prepared to see your read through with chips.

What was the pre-flop action? Making a continuation bet in a multi-way pot on a dangerous flop can be the worst course of action. And, if you re-raised pre-flop and someone's called, it's probably wiser to avoid pumping the pot in a situation where you could be in deep trouble. If you're in position, checking the flop behind and waiting to see how they react on the turn could be a better option. If they check again, make the bet and take the pot.

You also have to keep a close eye on stack sizes, both yours and the other players in the pot. If you make a C-bet, are you committing yourself to the pot? If you are, you're better off checking or shoving.

One good side effect of the C-bet is that if you do it more often than not, you can take advantage of the time when the flop smashes you full-on. If your opponents have been observing you C-bet and either folding or taking the pot on a regular basis, they're more likely to shove over the top of what they perceive as an automatic bluff at the pot. Similarly, if you have seen that someone C-bets as a matter of course, you can check a monster flop to them, and then either call the bet and hope they fire again on the turn, or come back over the top and pick up extra chips.

The thing of it is this .... This kind of betting has been around along time. Before the online Internet game, in this country (UK) the main game was 'pot limit', and the 'C Bet' then was used by a few of the circuit players, it was then called re-potting.. It's just that in the old days if you had an edge you'd keep it to yourself, or share with one or two close friends ...
Today's 'kids' have renamed and invented their own languages, they like to share 'info' in groups or in their own circle of poker buddies, some are very good, so as the old saying goes,
"If you cant beat them join them" !! However, my way of thinking is, "If you have an 'edge' or a 'tell', keep it to yourself and run good under the radar !!
