New year honour..
Charlie Lister receives OBE New Year honour
CHARLIE LISTER, who this year set a new benchmark by winning the williamhill.com Greyhound Derby for a record sixth time, ends 2011 with an arguably even greater personal milestone and is henceforth Charles Richard Lister OBE after receiving the commendation in the New Year’s Honours List. Also a six-time winner of the Scottish Derby, in which he was again successful this year, 71-year-old Lister ranks as one of the all-time greats in greyhound racing with 14 other ‘Classic’ victories and 46 other major competition victories. Earlier this month, Silverview Perky gave him his first Oaks success to fill a rare blank on his cv. Also renowned as a trainer of trainers – the likes of Kelly Findlay, who finished fourth in the 2011 standings just one place behind her old boss, Jim Daly and Michael Harris all worked for him at one time – Lister’s honour should not have come as a surprise, but it did to him! “I thought it was a wind-up when I got the first letter and I think I chucked it in the bin,” revealed Lister, “but then I got another and realised it was serious.
