Villa sack Tim Sherwood . (October 25th 2015)

Tim Sherwood has been sacked as manager of Aston Villa, the club have confirmed.


The boss leaves after only taking charge in February, paying the price for the club's dismal start to the Barclays Premier League season.

Villa lost 2-1 at home to Swansea on Saturday, a sixth straight defeat in the league, and they are four points from the safety line, having not won since the opening day.

Assistant manager Ray Wilkins, first-team coach Mark Robson and performance analyst Seamus Brady have also left, with Kevin MacDonald, who has been coaching the under-21s, placed in temporary charge.

A club statement said: "Aston Villa Football Club has parted company with manager Tim Sherwood today.

"The board has monitored the performances closely all season and believes the results on the pitch were simply not good enough and that a change is imperative.

"However, the club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Tim for all his efforts during a difficult period last season and for the many positive contributions he has made to the entire football set-up during his time with the club. We wish him well in the future.

"Assistant manager Ray Wilkins, first-team coach Mark Robson and performance analyst Seamus Brady have also left with immediate effect and do so with our best wishes.

"A search for a new manager has commenced and the squad will be managed in the interim by Kevin MacDonald."


Sherwood had vowed to fight for his job, but admitted last week he had been given no reassurances over his position by chief executive Tom Fox or owner Randy Lerner.

And, after Saturday's loss to the Swans, he conceded he did not speak to chairman Lerner but used sporting director Hendrik Almstadt as a go-between.

Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert in February and guided Villa to safety last season, as well as taking them to the FA Cup final, where they lost 4-0 to Arsenal.

The former Tottenham boss leaves Villa having lost 16 of his 28 games in charge, winning 10 and drawing two.

Moyes favourite for Villa job (October 25 2015)

David Moyes is the early odds-on favourite to be the next Aston Villa manager after Tim Sherwood's departure.


The Real Sociedad boss heads the running at 4/6 as the contenders shape up for the top job at Villa Park.

Former Leicester manager Nigel Pearson and ex-Liverpool chief Brendan Rodgers are the other two early front-runners at 3/1 and 5/1 respectively.

Bob Bradley, the former United States coach and current boss of Norwegian outfit Stabek, can be supported at 12/1 to be the next man in at Villa and Birmingham boss Gary Rowett is an early 20/1 chance to move across the city.

Ron Atkinson is available at 50/1 to make a sensational return to Villa Park.


"David Moyes is not having a good time of it in Spain and would jump at the chance to come back to the Premier League.

"Brendan Rodgers hasn't been out of a job long and may see a team of Villa's stature as an opportunity to prove the doubters from his time at Liverpool wrong."

Sherwood's dismissal sees Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho as the even-money favourite in the next Premier League manager to go market.
