West Ham sign Stewart Downing
![]() West Ham have confirmed the signing of England international Stewart Downing from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee. ![]() Downing has agreed a four-year deal with the Hammers and he follows Andy Carroll in making a permanent move from Anfield to Upton Park this summer. The 29-year-old, who has won 34 caps for England, is West Ham's fifth new recruit of the summer following the signings of Carroll, Romania captain Razvan Rat, Spanish goalkeeper Adrian and midfielder Danny Whitehead. "I'm very excited," said Downing, who is predominantly a left winger but spent a lot of time playing at left back for Liverpool last season. He added on West Ham's official website: "It's a great opportunity for me being here, it's a great club and I'm really excited to get going. "I'm ready and I'm fit for the first game against Cardiff City. I've played a decent few games for Liverpool in pre-season, so there will be no problems on that front." update btd ![]()

West Ham United co-owner David Gold admits the club are short of a striker, but says they must sell before recruiting.
David Gold: Admits West Ham are in need of another goalscorer The Hammers have landed Andy Carroll on a permanent deal this summer, but the England international is currently sidelined with a heel problem. Modibo Maiga is the only recognised senior forward on the books at Upton Park who is fully fit at present, and he started Saturday's 2-0 victory over Premier League new boys Cardiff City. Sam Allardyce would welcome the opportunity to bolster his ranks before the transfer window slams shut, but he has reached his limit in terms of player salaries. That means he must free up his own funds, with Gold revealing that players must be moved on before any more can be brought in. He told Sky Sports News: "We have reached our target laid down by the new rules in terms of wages. "The only possibility now is if players are sold. That's up to Sam, that's in his hands. If he releases wages, that will give us the opportunity to bring in replacements for those players. "I think it's clear that we are still short of a striker. David Sullivan agrees with that, Sam agrees with that, but until we release those wages by players leaving, there is little we can do. "The next couple of weeks, we will see what happens." update btd ![]()

I suppose in all fairness we were never going to get a result against this seasons champions elect , where as norwich at home is another matter altogethher, saying this newcastle were absolutely crap last night and its what i was expecting after our summer of great signings, pretty good result getting beat 4-0, think if taylor had of stayed on it might have been 6 or 7,but losing cabaye will cost us any chance of having a decent season and i dont care anyway,as football has turned into a game of candy crush,
