Saturdays Premier League round-up
Premier League review:
Arsenal get Unai Emery's first win, Man City held at Wolves as Liverpool go top ( August 25 2018) Arsenal get their first win of the season and Everton surrender a two-goal lead at Bournemouth - a round-up of Saturday's action... Premier League results Wolves 1-1 Manchester City Arsenal 3-1 West Ham Bournemouth 2-2 Everton Huddersfield 0-0 Cardiff Southampton 1-2 Leicester Liverpool 1-0 Brighton Arsenal had to dig deep as they came from behind to seal an unconvincing 2-1 victory over West Ham at the Emirates. Unai Emery toasted a first victory as Arsenal head coach - after the Gunners had lost to Manchester City and Chelsea in Emery's first two games - and could easily have slipped to a third defeat before eventually running out 3-1 winners at the Emirates Stadium. West Ham, who have now lost their first three matches under Manuel Pellegrini, took the lead through Marko Arnautovic only for Nacho Monreal to equalise soon after. Arsenal went in front through a debut own goal from Issa Diop and Danny Welbeck came off the bench to score a late third. Wolves 1-1 Manchester City: Pep Guardiola's Premier League champions held at Molineux Manchester City had to come from behind as Aymeric Laporte's second-half header rescued a 1-1 draw at Wolves. The Premier League newcomers took the lead early in the second half after Willy Boly's controversial opener at Molineux, where the Wolves centre-back appeared to score with his arm. Laporte, a £57m January signing from Athletic Bilbao, scored his first goal for the club on 69 minutes and City could not find a winner thereafter. Aymeric Laporte: The French defender celebrates his first goal for Manchester City. Sergio Aguero - twice - and Raheem Sterling hit the frame of the goal for City while Wolves' Raul Jimenez had a strike disallowed for offside. It was only the fifth time City had dropped points in the Premier League this calendar year, despite dominating for long spells. Liverpool 1-0 Brighton and Hove Albion: Jurgen Klopp's side maintain perfect start Mohamed Salah extended his extraordinary goalscoring run at Anfield as Liverpool went top of the Premier League for the first time since November 2016 with a disjointed 1-0 win over Brighton. The last occasion was after a 6-1 demolition of Watford but there were no such fireworks this time, although Jurgen Klopp's side capitalised on Manchester City's draw at Wolves to maintain their 100 per cent record with a third successive win. It maintained a 16-month undefeated league run at home, where they have now scored 20 goals without reply - their best run since they hit 20 in a row in 1987-88. Salah's precision strike, his 29th in as many home matches since joining the club, was all it required, curling a low shot inside the far post in the 23rd minute. Bournemouth scored twice in five second-half minutes to force a dramatic 2-2 draw with Everton after both sides were reduced to 10 men. Goals from Theo Walcott and Michael Keane looked to have put Marco Silva's Toffees on course for three points at the Vitality Stadium following Richarlison's red card for headbutting Adam Smith. But the Cherries, who had defender Smith dismissed for bringing down Theo Walcott at 1-0, halved the deficit through Joshua King's penalty before Nathan Ake tapped in 11 minutes from time. The game ended with concern for Toffees defender Keane after he left the field on a stretcher following a nasty collision with team-mate Idrissa Gueye. The previous six Premier League games between these two clubs produced 25 goals and this one did not disappoint. Harry Maguire's late drive handed Claude Puel sweet revenge over his ex-employers as Leicester saw off 10-man Southampton 2-1 at St Mary's. England defender Maguire's drilled effort in stoppage time added insult to injury for Saints, who had Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg sent off for two bookings. Ryan Bertrand's thunderbolt strike on his 150th appearance for the club had the hosts in front, only for Demarai Gray to equalise just four minutes later. Hojbjerg's dismissal after diving in the Leicester box gifted the Foxes the chance to steal the points, and the visitors duly obliged - much to Puel's delight. The ex-Nice boss was sacked in 2017 despite guiding Saints to an eighth-place Premier League finish and the League Cup final. Southampton's wait for their first win of the season goes on, with Mark Hughes' men now boasting just three victories in their last 28 Premier League games at St Mary's. Huddersfield 0-0 Cardiff City: Points shared in West Yorkshire Jonathan Hogg was sent off following an ugly collision with Harry Arter as Huddersfield and Cardiff ground out a goalless draw that did little to advertise their Premier League pedigree. Both sides are tipped as relegation candidates and if this was really the earliest imaginable 'six-pointer' of the season then taking one apiece suggests a long, hard campaign could be on the way for David Wagner and Neil Warnock. Hogg saw red just after the hour, aggravated by Arter but responding boorishly - first pushing forward with his head then shoving the midfielder to the ground. That gave Cardiff time to press for a win which had never previously seemed likely, but they proved no more able than their hosts to summon a cutting edge worthy of the top flight.
