Cherries take Championship crown . (May 2 2015)

A review of the final day of the Sky Bet Championship season as Bournemouth's win over Charlton saw them claim the title.

A dramatic final day in the Sky Bet Championship saw Bournemouth crowned champions and Brentford earn a play-off place.

The title looked destined for Watford, who prior to kick-off held a one-point lead at the top of the table, as they went into stoppage time 1-0 up at Vicarage Road against Sheffield Wednesday.

But, just as the Owls had pooped Bournemouth's promotion party last month with a late equalising goal, they did so again - but on a much grander scale.

Atdhe Nuhiu's shot looped agonisingly over Heurelho Gomes to cancel out Matej Vydra's opening goal for Watford and it finished 1-1.

Bournemouth were already two goals ahead at Charlton by the time Vydra scored, with Matt Ritchie and Harry Arter getting the Cherries off to a flying start in London.

As news of Nuhiu's equaliser began to filter through, Ritchie scored his second goal of the game and Eddie Howe's men ended the season in style - as champions - with a 3-0 victory.

The race to fill the remaining two play-off places was just as enthralling.

Brentford, seventh at the start of the afternoon, eventually finished fifth in the table courtesy of a 3-0 win against relegated Wigan.

Alex Pritchard, Ramallo Jota and Andre Gray were on target, while James Tarkowski could even afford to see his last-minute penalty saved.

The Bees, who will play Middlesbrough in the play-offs, replaced Derby in the top six after the Rams capitulated at home to Reading.

Steve McClaren's men, beaten at Wembley last season, made an awful start as Kwesi Appiah put the Royals ahead after two minutes.

Darren Bent saw his penalty brilliantly saved by Adam Federici just before half-time as Derby were denied a way back into the game. Michael Hector's goal and a late Garath McCleary penalty condemned the Rams to a 3-0 defeat.

Ipswich were also beaten but, unlike Derby, managed to hold on to their play-off spot and face a East Anglia showdown with Norwich.

Daryl Murphy put Mick McCarthy's team ahead in the second minute but Blackburn turned the match on its head with goals from Jordan Rhodes, Craig Conway and Rudy Gestede. Murphy replied for Ipswich from the penalty spot and a 3-2 loss was enough for the Tractor Boys.

Wolves won 4-2 at home to relegated Millwall but it was not enough and they missed out on the play-offs on goal difference.

Nouha Dicko's double put the hosts in control and Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Bakary Sako were also on the scoresheet, while Aiden O'Brien and Jamie Philpot pulled goals back for Millwall.

It was also 4-2 at Carrow Road, where Norwich defeated Fulham.

Bradley Johnson, Nathan Redmond and Graham Dorrans put the Canaries in control. Matt Smith replied for Fulham before Bradley Johnson then scored at either end.

Nottingham Forest finished the campaign with another defeat as Joe Ralls and Eoin Doyle scored in Cardiff's 2-1 win at the City Ground.

David Marshall was sent off for the Bluebirds before Dexter Blackstock halved Forest's deficit late on.

A goal from Robert Tesche, on loan from Forest, saw Birmingham win 1-0 at Bolton, while elsewhere it was goalless between Middlesbrough and Brighton and Leeds and Rotherham, although, true to his word, Millers manager Steve Evans did turn up in his sombrero and beach-wear.

It was also 0-0 at Bloomfield Road between Blackpool and Huddersfield, when the match was abandoned at the start of the second half after home fans invaded the pitch and staged a protest against the Oyston family, who own the club.

Saints teenager joins Wycombe (October 13th 2015)

Southampton teenager Jason McCarthy has signed for Sky Bet League 2 high-flyers Wycombe on a one-month loan.

Centre-back McCarthy, 19, made his Saints debut as a substitute in the Boxing Day victory over Crystal Palace and captained the club to the Under-21 Premier League Cup last term.

"Jason's a very highly-rated defender who's had good experience in the under-21s at Southampton and they feel he's ready to go out and get a taste of what senior football is like at League Two level," Chairboys boss Gareth Ainsworth explained on his club's official website.

"Our last two games haven't reached our high standards defensively and he's a new option who adds competition for us, with Anthony Stewart still missing for another couple of months."

Wycombe moved into the Sky Bet League 2 play-off places thanks to Garry Thompson's goal in their 1-1 draw with promotion rivals Accrington.


Thompson levelled in the 62nd minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the area and driving it home from 12 yards.

This was after Shay McCartan had opened the scoring for fifth-placed Stanley in time added on at the end of the first half.

In a first half of few chances, the game came to life when Billy Kee fed McCartan and, with Wycombe appealing for offside, the striker raced into the area and fired the ball into the bottom corner.

Stanley, who still hope to secure a top-three place, had chances to increase their lead after the break but Kee was denied by goalkeeper Ryan Allsop before Thompson pounced.

The game could have then gone either way, with Allsop denying Sean McConville and Piero Mingoia a Stanley winner while Wycombe's Paul Hayes was kept out by Ross Etheridge at the other end.

A review of Saturday's action in the Sky Bet Championship, as Brighton go top again after winning at Barnsley. - - (Feb 19th 2017)

Sam Baldock scored two second-half goals as Brighton won 2-0 at Barnsley to climb back to the top of the Sky Bet Championship.

The Seagulls striker broke the deadlock seven minutes after half-time and struck his 10th goal of the season soon after the hour mark to put the visitors in control.

Chris Hughton's side had won only one of their previous four league games, but leapfrogged back into top spot, two points clear of overnight leaders Newcastle, who play Aston Villa at St James' Park on Monday night.

Leeds lost ground on the top two as they drew 1-1 at Ipswich, who extended their unbeaten league run to four matches.

Garry Monk's play-off chasers fell behind to Freddie Sears' first goal for Ipswich since October, but equalised through Stuart Dallas three minutes before half-time.

Leeds rode their luck in the second half when David McGoldrick's shot hit the crossbar.

Sheffield Wednesday moved level on points with fifth-placed Leeds as a 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest secured a fourth straight league victory.

Almen Abdi registered his first goal for Wednesday in the first half and Fernando Forestieri put the visitors 2-0 ahead early in the second period.

Keiren Westwood saved on-loan Forest striker Ross McCormack's 27th-minute penalty after the Owls keeper had brought down Ben Brereton and Abdi scored the opening goal a minute later.

Ben Osborn pulled one back for the home side on the hour mark, but Forest slipped to their third straight defeat.

Neil Warnock's Cardiff made it four wins out of their last five league games by thrashing bottom club Rotherham 5-0 at home.

Kadeem Harris and Junior Hoilett put Cardiff 2-0 up at half-time before Craig Noone and Kenneth Zohore's double secured the Welsh side's biggest win of the season. Defeat left Rotherham with just one point to show from 17 league games on the road this season.

Birmingham manager Gianfranco Zola saw his faltering side go down 4-1 at home to QPR.

Matt Smith headed his first goal for QPR midway through the first half and Conor Washington doubled the Londoners' lead early in the second period.

Idrissa Sylla's header and Yeni Ngbakoto's late free-kick ensured a miserable afternoon for Zola and although Emilio Nsue netted a stoppage-time consolation, Birmingham have lost five of their last six matches.

Burton gave their survival hopes a major boost by halting Norwich's six-game unbeaten run with a 2-1 win at the Pirelli Stadium.

The Brewers went ahead through on-loan Fulham striker Cauley Woodrow's first goal for the club midway through the first period. Although Cameron Jerome headed Norwich level, the home side regained the lead through Michael Kightly in the 56th minute.

Wigan goalkeeper Matt Gilks helped clinch his side a point from a goalless draw against Preston at the DW Stadium.

Gilks saved Jordan Hugill's early penalty after Omar Bogle had fouled Callum Robinson.

Brighton 1-2 Newcastle: Magpies back top of the table - (February 28th 2017)


Two late goals secured a 2-1 win for Newcastle at Brighton and a return to the top of the Sky Bet Championship.

The Seagulls were leading through Glenn Murray's controversial penalty until a fortunate effort from Mo Diame nine minutes from time hauled Newcastle level.

Then with a minute to go, substitute Ayoze Perez secured the victory and lifted the Magpies back above Brighton at the summit.

Both these teams are looking over their shoulders with third-placed Huddersfield building up a head of steam as they try to muscle in on the automatic promotion spots, and it is Newcastle who will be breathing easier after moving eight points clear of the Terriers.

Brighton, having regained top spot at the weekend after Newcastle stuttered at home to Bristol City, went at their visitors from the start with Bruno and Sam Baldock forcing early saves from Karl Darlow.

The breakthrough came in the 14th minute when Ciaran Clark and Murray tangled in the area as they awaited a corner.

If anything the pair were wrestling each other, but top-flight ref Bobby Madley ruled in Murray's favour and the striker coolly dispatched his 17th league goal of the season from the spot.

Brighton had won all 18 of the previous matches in which they had scored first this season, but this was going to be a major test of that record - especially after left-back Seb Pocognoli limped off to leave young substitute Fikayo Tomori to deal with the threat of Christian Atsu.

Newcastle began to find their feet and Matt Ritchie's cross clipped the crossbar before Yoan Gouffran, a surprise choice up front in the absence of injured top scorer Dwight Gayle, robbed Lewis Dunk only to see his shot saved by David Stockdale.

The visitors should have equalised In first-half stoppage time when DeAndre Yedlin's cross was met by Atsu eight yards out, but he placed his shot too close to Stockdale who made a fine point-blank save.

Moments into the second half Brighton went agonisingly close to doubling their lead, Dunk's header beating Darlow but cleared from under the bar by Paul Dummett.

Newcastle were roared on by an impressive 2,600 fans, many who made a 700-mile round trip, and poured forward again but Stockdale denied Gouffran and kept out Daryl Murphy's header.

However, with the clock running down Stockdale punched a corner to the feet of Atsu.

He mis-hit his shot completely on the edge of the area and it was hurtling yards wide. However, the ball spun off Diame and looped into the air, eluding Stockdale and finding the top right corner, leaving the goalkeeper crestfallen and both Newcastle players looking at each other in disbelief.

There was an even later sting in the tail when Atsu got clear down the left and crossed for Perez to sidefoot a dramatic winner and put Newcastle back in control of the promotion race.
