Review of FA Cup (3rd Round)
FA Cup round-up:
Coventry shock Stoke (January 06 2018) Review from Saturday's action in the third round of the FA Cup. Saturday's FA Cup results Fleetwood 0-0 Leicester Middlesbrough 2-0 Sunderland Aston Villa 1-3 Peterborough Birmingham 1-0 Burton Blackburn 0-1 Hull Bolton 1-2 Huddersfield Bournemouth 2-2 Wigan Brentford 0-1 Notts County Cardiff 0-0 Mansfield Carlisle 0-0 Sheffield Wednesday Coventry 2-1 Stoke Doncaster 0-1 Rochdale Exeter 0-2 West Brom Fulham 0-1 Southampton Ipswich 0-1 Sheffield United Manchester City 4-1 Burnley Millwall 4-1 Barnsley Newcastle 3-1 Luton QPR 0-1 MK Dons Stevenage 0-0 Reading Watford 3-0 Bristol City Wolves 0-0 Swansea Wycombe 1-5 Preston Yeovil 2-0 Bradford Norwich 0-0 Chelsea Stoke fell to the biggest FA Cup third-round upset as they lost 2-1 against Coventry of Sky Bet League Two at the Ricoh Arena. Potters boss Mark Hughes viewed the match as a "typical cup tie, so I suppose everybody will be gearing up for a potential upset" - and his worst fear was realised against a team three divisions lower. Defenders Jordan Willis and Jack Grimmer got the goals for Coventry, with a Charlie Adam penalty doing little to ease the pressure on under-fire Hughes. Bournemouth looked destined to be another Premier League team embarrassed by lower league opposition until Steve Cook rescued a 2-2 draw at home to Wigan in injury-time. Will Grigg opened the scoring in the fifth minute and the Latics doubled their lead through an own goal by Emerson Hyndman. But Lys Mousset began the fightback before Cook fired the late equaliser to take the tie to a replay. Runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City marched on in their quest to win four trophies this season with a 4-1 rout of Burnley. A defensive error enabled Ashley Barnes to give the visitors an unexpected league only for Pep Guardiola's men to take full control through two goals from Sergio Aguero and one each by Leroy Sane and Bernado Silva. Chelsea's peripheral players failed to impress in a goalless draw at Carrow Road as Norwich earned an FA Cup third-round replay. Chelsea struggled against the Canaries, for whom Alex Pritchard, Josh Murphy and James Maddison excelled going forwards. Given Antonio Conte's regular fixture complaints, he would not have wanted a replay, but Championship Norwich frustrated the Blues, who came closest when Willian's effort was turned round a post by Angus Gunn. And Chelsea, Premier League champions and FA Cup finalists last season, will now host Daniel Farke's men at Stamford Bridge in 10 days' time. Leicester were held to a goalless draw by League One club Fleetwood at Highbury Stadium. Jamie Vardy was forced to miss the clash with his former team because of a groin problem and the 2016 Premier League champions barely threatened the home side in his absence. Huddersfield progressed to the fourth round after strikes by Rajiv van La Parra and Danny Williams resulted in a 2-1 victory at Bolton. Alan Pardew oversaw his first win as West Brom boss in a comfortable 2-0 victory against Exeter. It took only 75 seconds for Saloman Rondon to grab the opener and Jay Rodriguez added the second, but Hal Robson-Kanu missed a penalty while the Baggies also had two goals disallowed. Southampton put their freefall down the Premier League to the back of their minds as James Ward-Prowse was on target in a 1-0 victory at Fulham. Bristol City placed the FA Cup down their list of priorities as they chase promotion from the Championship and prepare for a Carabao Cup semi-final first leg at Manchester City. The Robins made seven changes against Watford and were punished by a 3-0 defeat at Vicarage Road, Andre Carrillo, Troy Deeney and Etienne Capoue scoring the goals. Newcastle swept aside Luton 3-1 with Ayoze Perez on target twice while Swansea were held to a goalless draw by Wolves. Sunderland's hopes of igniting their season through a meaningful cup run ended with a 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough in their Tees-Wear derby showdown. Rudy Gestede and Martin Braithwaite struck before half-time to put the game beyond the reach of the Championship's bottom-placed club. Aston Villa slipped up 3-1 at home to Peterborough and there were also wins for Millwall, Hull, Notts County, Birmingham, Rochdale, Sheffield United, MK Dons, Preston and Yeovil. Cardiff v Mansfield, Carlisle v Sheffield Wednesday and Stevenage v Reading all finished goalless.
