Premier League round-up: Back-to-back wins for Newcastle and Tottenham edge Crystal Palace (November 10, 2018)

Rondon at the double, Newcastle in successive St James' Park wins

Salomon Rondon's first-half double handed Newcastle back-to-back Premier League victories as they scrapped all the way to fend off a Bournemouth fightback.

Loan signing Rondon scored his first league goal for the Magpies after seven minutes and then doubled his tally with a bullet header five minutes before the break to set the stage for a 2-1 win.

Jefferson Lerma reduced the deficit six minutes into first-half stoppage time after Adam Smith had been carried off on a stretcher, but despite mounting a concerted effort after the break, that was as good as it got in front of a crowd of 49,266 at St James' Park.

Newcastle had gone 10 league games without a win at the start of the campaign, but on a day when they had slipped back into the bottom three following Cardiff's victory over Brighton, they added three more points to those collected against Watford last weekend to ease their fears.

The match also produced a winning tip from Sporting Life's Premier League betting preview, as the visitors took more corners than Newcastle.
Tottenham make it six wins from last seven to continue charge at the top

Juan Foyth shrugged off his nightmare Premier League debut to score his first goal in professional football as Tottenham won 1-0 at Crystal Palace.

In last week's fixture at Wolves Foyth conceded two penalties to put Spurs' eventual 3-2 victory and his reputation at risk.

But, with his team struggling to convince at Selhurst Park, the 20-year-old Argentinian demonstrated an unrivaled hunger and desire to seize on the loose ball and head home the goal that secured all three points.

Anything less and a victory for Arsenal on Sunday, also against Wolves, would have meant Spurs dropping out of the top four and being replaced by their rivals.

They instead secured their third win in eight days, and worsened Palace's misery on an evening when they had again struggled in the absence of the injured Wilfried Zaha.

Referee Simon Hooper was centre stage in Southampton's 1-1 draw with Watford.

Manolo Gabbiadini's first goal of the campaign gave Saints the lead in the 20th minute and Hooper's first contentious decision came when he denied Watford a penalty after Ryan Bertrand appeared to take out Nathaniel Chalobah.

Less than 10 minutes later, Charlie Austin thought he had doubled Southampton's advantage only for Hooper to rule it out, and Jose Holebas equalised eight minutes from time.

Felipe Anderson fired a second-half equaliser to rescue West Ham a point in a thrilling 1-1 Premier League draw at Huddersfield.

Anderson notched his third goal in two games by smashing home a 74th-minute rebound after Alex Pritchard's first of the season had given Huddersfield a half-time lead.

Huddersfield played some of their best football of the season in the first period when they twice hit the woodwork and will be disappointed not to have clinched the back-to-back Premier League wins they craved.

But the Hammers improved in the second period and created enough chances to have snatched victory themselves.

That goal ensured another winning tip, as we backed Manuel Pellegrini's side to win the second half in our match preview.

Neil Warnock took charge of his 100th game as Cardiff manager and there was plenty to celebrate as Sol Bamba scored a 90th-minute winner to overcome 10-man Brighton 2-1.

Warnock was among those jumping for joy as Bamba's close-range effort - after Cardiff had twice struck the frame of the goal in a crazy six-yard box incident - took the Bluebirds out of the Premier League relegation zone before the later kick-offs.

Cardiff striker Callum Paterson had cancelled out Lewis Dunk's early effort before Brighton were handicapped by Dale Stephens' 34th-minute dismissal for a studs-up challenge on Greg Cunningham.

It was not a new experience for Cardiff to be playing against 10 men, as Newcastle and Huddersfield had players sent off against them earlier this season.

Cardiff had let points slip in those goalless draws, but such profligacy was avoided this time in a frantic late goalmouth skirmish.

Bamba sent an overhead kick against a post before Paterson's follow-up effort was deflected onto the crossbar by Dunk.

There was no third let-off for Brighton, though, as Bamba had clambered back onto his feet to thump home.

Points shared at Leicester on emotional return to King Power

Leicester were held at home by Burnley in an emotional first game at the King Power Stadium since the death of owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.

Fans, players and staff remembered the Foxes' late chairman before, during and after the 0-0 draw with the Clarets on Saturday.

A host of tributes were paid following the helicopter crash which claimed his life, and that of four others, two weeks ago.

On the pitch, Rachid Ghezzal hit the bar and Matt Lowton cleared off the line from Jamie Vardy as the Foxes, who dominated for long spells and remain 10th, tried without success to find a winner.

Chris Wood wasted Burnley's best chance when he shot over unmarked from 12 yards, with Sean Dyche's men winless in five Premier League matches.

A poignant video of Srivaddhanaprabha was played ahead of kick-off and his son, and vice chairman, Aiywatt laid a wreath ahead of a two-minute silence, also for Remembrance Sunday.

The club also honoured Kaveporn Punpare, Nusara Suknamai, pilot Eric Swaffer and his partner Izabela Roza Lechowicz who also died in the crash, while a tearful Aiywatt and the squad saluted the fans from the pitch after the game.

Harry Maguire, James Maddison, Andy King and Hamza Choudhury, none of whom featured against Burnley, had led a march of fans from the city centre to the stadium ahead of the match.
