FA Cup fourth round results & review: Millwall win thriller against Everton with a stoppage-time goal (January 26, 2019)

A review of Saturday's FA Cup fourth-round action as Millwall beat Everton in a thriller, Newport earned a draw and Man City charged on.

Wimbledon shock limp Hammers

AFC Wimbledon rekindled the Crazy Gang spirit of years gone by to produce a shock 4-2 FA Cup victory over West Ham.

The Dons, languishing at the foot of League One and heavily beaten by Barnsley and Fleetwood in their last two matches, were hardly given a prayer of getting past the Premier League Hammers.

But they did not just knock them out, they outplayed and outmuscled them for the best part of an hour, Scott Wagstaff scoring twice after Kwesi Appiah's opener.

Substitutes Lucas Perez and Felipe Anderson raised hopes of a comeback for the Hammers, but they were extinguished when Toby Sibbick struck the fourth two minutes from time.

Instead West Ham slunk back to east London on the end of surely one of the most embarrassing defeats in their history, the club who spent £100million in the summer sent packing by a team of youngsters and free transfers.

Dons boss Wally Downes said: "The result was the plan, but it certainly wasn't my idea to go and win 4-2!

"What was important for the players was they got over the performance they put out on Tuesday night (when they lost 3-0 at home to Fleetwood).

"I told them it was a great game to blow the cobwebs away from a poor performance on Tuesday night. It was a great opportunity to do it and they did, they stood up to it."

Downes, who played for the old Wimbledon, added: "Football is random. There is a load of analysis that we do, and I'm part of that, but football is random and on any given day, any team can beat any other team.

"Over the course of the season, the consistently better teams come to the top, but on a one-off night like tonight, anyone can beat anybody. We used to do it all the time, and we've done it tonight."
Lions roar at the Den

Murray Wallace struck a dramatic late goal as Millwall claimed a shock 3-2 victory over Everton in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Sky Bet Championship side twice had to come from behind against their Premier League opponents before snatching the winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

The Toffees took the lead with their first effort on goal in the half, but they had a poor piece of goalkeeper from Jordan Archer to thanks.

Richarlison found space 25 yards out and hit a low drive at Archer, and the ball bounced awkwardly in front of him before squirming underneath his arms and into the goal.

They did not take that lead into the break however, with Lee Gregory popping up in the closing stages to nod over Jordan Pickford after a free kick had been punted into the Everton box.

The game burst back into life with just under 20 minutes to go as Cenk Tosun raced onto a through ball from Gylfi Sigurdsson before clipping beyond Archer, but once again they were pegged back almost immediately.

This time it was Jake Cooper who levelled things, but it was a controversial goal as the ball appeared to come off his arm before going into an empty goal but after consultation with his assistant, Michael Oliver awarded it.

With just over a minute of stoppage time remaining Millwall grabbed a dramatic winner thanks to Murray Wallace.

Another free kick was lumped into the box and it bounced down to Wallace who poked into the back of the net to send the crowd wild.

Wolves salvage Shrews replay

Matt Doherty's last-gasp header rescued Wolves after they hit back from 2-0 down to force an FA Cup replay against Shrewsbury.

The defender struck in the second minute of stoppage time to earn a 2-2 draw and break the hosts' hearts in Shropshire.

Greg Docherty and Luke Waterfall had put Shrewsbury in control with 19 minutes left, but Raul Jimenez pulled a goal back before Doherty saved Wolves' blushes against their Sky Bet League One hosts.

Shrewsbury almost made a mockery of the 54 places between the sides but were forced to settle for a fourth-round replay at Molineux.

The visitors, eighth in the Premier League, were poor and it was nearly Shrewsbury's first win over a top-flight side since beating Everton in 2003.

Free-scoring Man City see off Burnley

Manchester City maintained their interest in four competitions by easing into the FA Cup fifth round with a commanding 5-0 win over Burnley.

Pep Guardiola's side won at a canter at the Etihad Stadium with Gabriel Jesus, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne strikes, a Sergio Aguero penalty and a Kevin Long own goal.

Burnley, who lost to City by the same score in October, were again poor but the game might have been different had Matej Vydra taken a gilt-edged chance when City led only 1-0 after half-time.

Instead, that merely served as a wake-up call for City, who had barely needed to exert themselves in the first half.

Newport continue cup heroics

Substitute Matthew Dolan snatched a dramatic injury-time equaliser as League Two Newport kept their FA Cup dream alive with a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

Daniel Ayala's 51st-minute header looked set to send Tony Pulis' men through to the fifth round as the visitors were guilty of missing a succession of late chances.

But the Exiles' persistence paid off in dramatic fashion as Boro failed to clear a Josh Sheehan cross and Dolan - who started his career at Middlesbrough - poked the equaliser past Darren Randolph.

Doncaster in last 16 after late drama

Ben Whiteman's late penalty handed Doncaster a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1956 with a dramatic 2-1 win against Oldham.

Veteran Peter Clarke looked to have denied Rovers with an 84th-minute equaliser after Whiteman's deflected effort midway through the second half had put the hosts ahead at the Keepmoat Stadium.

The result was harsh on League Two Oldham, who gave as good as they got against a side from the division above them.

The Latics hit the post and regularly tested goalkeeper Marko Marosi in an end-to-end second half, only for referee Peter Bankes to spot a late handball which gave Doncaster the decisive penalty.

Oldham then had Clarke sent off in stoppage time after he collected a second yellow card.

Watford see off relegation-battling Newcastle

Andre Gray and Isaac Success justified manager Javi Gracia's decision to change his entire team as they fired Watford into the FA Cup fifth round at the expense of Newcastle.

As he had done in the previous round, Gracia made 11 changes for the trip to St James' Park but saw his understudies outplay Rafael Benitez's reshuffled side, whose record of not having made it past the fourth round since 2006 remains painfully intact.

Gray's 62nd-minute strike and a late second from Success were enough to settle a forgettable tie 2-0 in front of a crowd of 34,604 on a day when the magic of the FA Cup failed to arrive on Tyneside - the managers made 18 changes between them.

Waghorn sends Rams into round five

Martyn Waghorn's solitary second-half strike clinched Derby a 1-0 FA Cup win in front of a record crowd at Accrington as both sides were reduced to 10 men.

Waghorn fired home from close range following a corner with 12 minutes left as the Sky Bet Championship side held on to avoid an upset at the Wham Stadium, where 5,397 watched the fourth-round tie.

Accrington midfielder Daniel Barlaser was sent off just before the hour mark when he received his second yellow card from referee Jon Moss for a late challenge on David Nugent.

League One side Stanley pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages and Derby defender Jayden Bogle was shown a straight red card in the 90th minute for his challenge on Paul Smyth.

Derby were indebted to goalkeeper Kelle Roos, who was at full stretch to keep out Billy Kee's subsequent free-kick.

Nahki Wells rescued QPR from FA Cup elimination at the hands of Portsmouth as the Championship side came from behind to draw 1-1 at a sold-out Fratton Park. Pompey took the lead in comical fashion in the 63rd minute when Rangers defender Joel Lynch sliced a Lee Brown cross into his own net. But Wells ensured a pulsating fourth-round tie went to a replay when he crashed home from close range 11 minutes later after Luke Freeman's corner had caused panic in the home defence.

Swansea eased into the fifth round of the FA Cup as Bersant Celina came up with a goal to remember in the 4-1 victory over Gillingham. Oli McBurnie's first-half double put Swansea in cruise control before Josh Rees gave Gillingham hope after the break with a fine header. But that hope was ended in the most spectacular style as Celina found the top corner from 25 yards, and Barrie McKay added another six minutes from time to see Swansea through to the last 16 of the FA Cup in consecutive seasons for the first time since the mid-1960s.
