Calzaghe v Jones ..Sat night.
Live on Santanta sports with the programme starting about 10.30pm and the fight expected to start around 2am.....
I will post a link for anyone who would like to watch it live on the pc.. Now onto my thoughts about this fight... Calzaghe is arguably our most sucsessful fighter ever holding an unbeaten record of 45 straight wins and has been a world champion since beating Chris Eubanks for the WBC super middleweight title in 1997... Over the next 11 years he has defended that title and the World light heavyweight title 21 times. I have never really been the greatest Calzaghe fan as in my opinion he is more of a counter puncher then a come forward fighter and this makes for a lot of fairly dull fights. Yes Calzaghe can hit and has dominated quite a few of his recent opponents but when he has fought a top fighter he has always settled for a points victory and in America against one of the best pound for pound fighters over the last 20 years in Jones this could be his un doing. Roy Jones has won world titles at four weights including Heavyweight which when you take into account he started at middleweight is some achievement. He never defended that and went back down to Light heavyweight where he he lost threes fights in a row and a few good judges thouight it was time for him to hang the gloves up but back he came with three good wins including his last against the great Felix Trinidad. There is no doubt that Jones has fought in a lot better class throughout his career and i think this will be the deciding factor in this fight. Calzaghe will look to pick Jones off and throw fast combinations but i feel Jones will be a little to cute for this and will make sure he gets out of punching range quickly... On the odd occasion Calzaghe likes to show his toughness and will try to turn fights into brawls but in the past this tactic has not always worked as he becomes very easy to hit and although his chin has always passed the test against a bigger puncher and bigger man in Jones this could be his undoing.. So summing up i feel this could be the fight where Calzaghe's great record will be put under the most presure it has ever been put under and i think Jones will end up being just a little to cute for the Welshman and with Calzaghe having to come forward more in the later rounds Jones will have the punch to maybe stop Calzaghe late on... My bets for this fight will be.. JONES by stoppage rounds 9 - 12 JONES to win on points... Should be a great fight and one not to miss.....

I have been watching the build up...
To this fight all week and i havnt seen Jones look in better shape for quite a while.
I really think Jones fancies this and 9/4 on a fighter who was the best pound for pound boxer for over 10 years looks great value. Benny might be right about the draw...something you can never rule out with a british fighter boxing in the states..Lennox Lewis v Holyfield (1) finished in a draw at this venue when ALL of the experts had Lewis winning the fight by at least 3 rounds.... I really dont think Calzaghe will have tthe power to stop Jones who although knocked out in two fights in a row was coming down from heavyweight and thats not an easy thing to do as he was losing nearly two stone to take those fights. Jones has now been at this weight for over 18 months and that problem wont come into this fight. Can Jones knock out Calzaghe...? Doubtful as Joe has one of the best chins in boxing but Jones does have power and has koed 67% of fighters he has fought which seeings as the opponents he has faced have over the last 10 years been top class is a fairly good record...If there is to be a ko then i see it being Calzaghe who will be on the canvas. Calzaghe has it all to lose here...unbeaten in 45 fights, going to tie the record of unbeaten fights (46) if he wins this.....and saying this will be his last fight heaps on the pressure.... Calzaghe has a clause for a re match in Wales should he lose this so this tells me the Calzaghe camp are not 100% confident of victory. So my bets posted still remain the same but as Benny says maybe a small saver on a draw could be the wise choice....

I've got to disagree with you on this one tony i think if this is going to be joe's curtain call then he will want to win this convincingly so i'd go the opposite to you lol joe sounds 9-12 or points to joe

Bally.....
Thats the good thing about this fight...its a pick em
Everyone will be split on their choices for one reason or another...should be a great fight.... 9/4 Jones is a bit like Chelsea being 3/1 to win at Old Trafford.....shouts value even if they dont win...

Latest reports....
is that Calzaghe is 6 to 8lbs over the weight with only five hours before the weigh in....
This is the worst possible senario for any fighter. A pound or maybe two isnt too bad but maybe half a stone could be a massive mistake..... Jones is 7/1 to win on points which looks a very very good price...

Oh well.....
You cant win them all...But after the first round knock down i thought this was going to be an easy night for Jones.
Calzaghe has amazing powers of recovery and it looked like Jones thought that he would catch up with him in round two or three and didnt go charging in when Calzaghe got up. In the end this proved the wrong thing to do as Calzaghe boxed his way back into the fight superbly and cut Jones very badly in the 5th. After Jones was cut it was downhill all the way as the corner failed to stem the flow of blood into Jones eye and this must have had a major effect on his vision. Calzaghe cruised through the last six rounds and although i though Jones maybe won round 12 Calzaghe already had the fight in the bag. As for the judges scoring of the fight which was 109 - 118 i had the fight a little closer then that. Jones won at least two of the first five rounds and maybe the last so that scoring combined with the 10-8 first round in Jones favour was a little baffling. I had Calzaghe a clear winner by 117 to 113 but whatever way you choose to look at it Calzaghe was a clear winner. As for a rematch.....i dont see that having much appeal now and if Calzaghe decides to fight on (which i believe he will) then only a rematch against Bernard Hopkins at The Millenium Stadium will attract the sort of interest boxing fans will be looking for and this really is the only fight the American pay per view buyers would want...
