Everton through; Magpies lose again (August 29 2018)

Newcastle were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Nottingham Forest on Wednesday while Everton got the better of Rotherham United at Goodison Park.

Everton sink Rotherham

Everton beat Rotherham 3-1 in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening thanks to a Gylfi Sigurdsson opener and a brace from Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Toffees made eight changes for the visit of SkyBet Championship side Rotherham with manager Marco Silva choosing to rest England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford completely.

It looked like a comfortable evening when Calvert-Lewin made it 2-0 just after the hour mark but Will Vaulks halved the deficit with four minutes to go to set up a potentially nervous ending.

However, Calvert-Lewin made sure there was to be no moments of anxiety with his second on 87 minutes to seal the tie for Silva and his men.

Calvert-Lewin's far post header from Digne's cross on the hour in front of a crowd of 31,972, Everton's highest for a home League Cup second round tie since 1968, established that important two goal cushion.

And when Vaulks nodded in late on Everton went straight down the other end for Calvert-Lewin to curl home his second.

VAR's first appearance at Goodison Park also passed without incident.

Forest shoot down Magpies

Newcastle's winless start to the season continued as they were dumped out by Championship side Nottingham Forest.

Forest, who beat the Magpies at the same stage last season, won 3-1 in a dramatic finish at the City Ground.

Daryl Murphy's second-minute header against his former club was cancelled out in stoppage time by Salomon Rondon's first goal for Newcastle, but substitute Matty Cash and Gil Dias both quickly scored at the other end.

Millwall edge five-goal thriller

Aiden O'Brien capped off a dramatic turnaround as Millwall came from behind to beat Plymouth 3-2 in their tie.

Jamie Ness' header was cancelled out by a Shaun Williams penalty before Freddie Ladapo's fine goal restored Argyle's advantage.

Lee Gregory equalised seven minutes from time before fellow substitute O'Brien nudged home to send Millwall through.

Hornets too strong for Reading

In the eight'o'clock kick-off Watford cruised to a 2-0 victory over Reading at the Madejksi Stadium.

Goals from Isaac Success on 37 minutes and Domingos Quina just after the hour mark were enough to send the unbeaten Premier League outfit through.
