This is a new era for West Ham — Grant and his players are learning about each other all the time and he has already realised that, after last season's narrow escape and successive defeats in his first two matches in charge, a root and branch change is required.

The former Chelsea and Portsmouth manager knows that he needs more quality in his team — and more leaders, strong-minded individuals who respond positively to adversity.

He said as much after his first win, a 1-0 Carling Cup victory over Oxford United on Tuesday night. “This team carried a lot of psychological problems,” he said.

“We speak about this. When everything is going well it is okay but when things are not so good it looks a bit nervous. It is important always to be fighting.
