St Louis Rams head back to LA (January 13 2016)The Rams

The St Louis Rams are returning to Los Angeles after a meeting of NFL owners in Houston on Tuesday voted 30-2 in favour of the relocation.

The Rams had played in Los Angeles for 48 years prior to moving to St Louis for the 1995 season, and will now move back.

St Louis fans have now lost two franchises after the Cardinals moved to Phoenix in 1988, the move to Los Angeles being the first of an NFL franchise since the Houston Oilers relocated to Nashville - and became known as the Tennessee Titans - in 1997.

"The NFL ignored the facts, the loyalty of St Louis fans, who supported the team through far more downs than ups, and the NFL ignored a strong market and viable plan for a new stadium," St Louis mayor Francis Slay said in a statement.

St Louis' efforts to keep the franchise in the city included plans for a 1.1billion US dollars venue on the river-front.

Slay added: "I am proud of our effort and what St Louis was able to accomplish in an extraordinarily short period of time. I thank everyone who worked so diligently on this project, especially the governor's task force."

Despite the opposition in St Louis, the NFL and Rams franchise owner Stan Kroenke were set on the return to LA.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told a news conference reported on nfl.com: "Relocation is a painful process.

"It's painful for the fans, the communities, the teams, for the league in general.

"Stability is something that we've taken a great deal of pride in and in some ways a bittersweet moment because we were unsuccessful in being able to get the kind of facilities that we wanted to get done in their home markets."

Kroenke added: "We understand the emotions involved of our fans and it's not easy to do these things.

"They are purposely made hard, but we're here today. We made a decision and we worked long and hard at the various alternatives. When they didn't succeed, we worked to this point."

Kroenke has plans to build a new stadium in the Inglewood area of LA by 2019.
