Cool Saturday's pre-season review

Ibe on target, Moyes sees win (July 24th 2016)

A review of Saturday's major pre-season action, as Jordon Ibe nets for Bournemouth and David Moyes sees Sunderland win.

Premier League sides were in the goals as they stepped up their pre-season preparations on Saturday, while David Moyes watched his new Sunderland team warm up with a win.

Moyes - confirmed as Sam Allardyce's successor in the morning - travelled to Rotherham's New York Stadium in the afternoon to see his new players beat the Championship side 2-1, posing for pictures with fans before taking his seat in the stands.

A bleached-haired Fabio Borini had put Sunderland ahead in South Yorkshire with a 29th-minute half-volley but Jerry Yates responded seconds after the restart, lashing beyond substitute goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

A string of changes for both sides disrupted the tempo but Charles N'Zogbia, who had teed up Borini's opener, got on the scoresheet himself to seal the win, prodding beyond Lee Camp with just four minutes remaining.

New signing Jordon Ibe opened his account for Bournemouth during a six-goal thriller at Portsmouth's Fratton Park.

The hosts took the lead against their south-coast rivals from the Premier League after just four minute when Gary Roberts slotted beyond Adam Federici.

Lewis Grabban tapped in an equaliser (24) but Pompey restored their lead just a minute later, Michael Smith pouncing when Enda Stevens' strike deflected kindly.

Ibe, a £15m summer signing from Liverpool, hauled the Cherries level again when he dropped a shoulder and cut inside before rifling low into the bottom corner.

The Cherries took the lead for the first time (79) when Rhoys Wiggins afforded Dan Gosling a simple task at the back post - but Pompey rallied themselves, Adam May poking home after a scramble (88) to ensure honours were even.

Swansea put on show against Sky Bet League 1 opposition, thrashing Bristol Rovers 5-1 at the Memorial Stadium.

Francesco Guidolin's side raced into a 3-0 lead inside 20 minutes thanks to goals from Andre Ayew (6), Leroy Fer (13) and Stephen Kingsley (18) as the gulf in class told.

Kyle Naughton produced a neat finish to make it four just moments after the restart and though Rovers, who belatedly settled after the break, pulled one back when Luke James made a dart into the box and coolly beat Kristoffer Nordfeldt (50), Wayne Routledge added further gloss to the scoreline (68) when he tucked home a Jack Cork ball.

Elsewhere, Ronald Koeman got off to a winning start as Everton eased past Championship new boys Barnsley 3-0 at Oakwell.

The Toffees were without John Stones amid speculation a move to Manchester City was drawing closer, but took the lead after just nine minutes when Kevin Mirallas curled in a free-kick from 25 yards.

Barnsley hit the post moment later through Alfie Mawson's fierce drive, while Sam Winnall went close with a header, but Everton finally doubled their lead on the hour when Gerard Deulofeu, picked out by Ross Barkley, rolled the ball into the back of the net.

Having set up one, Barkley scored a thunderbolt of a third, swivelling on the edge of the box before lashing home (71).

Hull shrugged off the departure of manager Steve Bruce by scoring two unanswered goals against Humber neighbours Scunthorpe at Glanford Park.

Mike Phelan took charge just hours after Bruce left by mutual consent but saw the Tigers boosted by goals either side of the break from Shaun Maloney (25) and substitute Abel Hernandez (66).

Burnley made light work of League One side Bradford, cruising to a 4-1 win at Valley Parade.

Three goals in five first-half minutes put the Clarets in control, Andre Gray taking his pre-season tally to four with goals in the 17th and 19th minutes, before Ben Mee headed a third (20) moments later.

City rallied, Billy Clarke rattling the post from a tight angle, but though Filipe Morais pulled one back a minute before the interval, Michael Kightly seized on a miscued clearance (79) to further boost the scoreline.

West Ham were convincing winners themselves, ending their pre-season trip to Austria with a 3-0 win over Karlsruher SC.

Summer signing Sofiane Feghouli started a move that Andy Carroll finished with his head just nine minutes in and the Algeria winger found the net himself soon after (17), firing low from 20 yards.

Fellow arrival Ashley Fletcher met an Aaron Cresswell cross with 10 minutes remaining to wrap up a comfortable win against Slaven Bilic's former side.

Stoke, meanwhile, had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Championship side Preston North End at Deepdale.

Jack Butland, Glen Johnson and Marc Wilson returned from injury to feature in a game that saw the hosts take the lead through a deflected Daniel Johnson strike.

Bojan was busy for most of the afternoon, striking the post after a jinking run, but it was his ball over the top that Mame Diouf finished off expertly (54) to seal a draw.
