Cool Sunday Football Review

A review of Sunday's action in the Premier League.

Tottenham inflicted Pep Guardiola's first defeat as Manchester City manager as they moved to within one point of the leaders with a scintillating 2-0 victory on Sunday.

Spurs got off to a flying start at White Hart Lane, taking the lead on nine minutes after Aleksandar Kolarov put through his own net before Dele Alli slotted a slick second seven minutes before half-time.

City, who trailed for the first time under Guardiola in the Premier League, rallied after the interval but struggled to replicate the form that had guided them to six top-flights wins from six beforehand.

In fact, things could have been worse for City had Erik Lamela not seen his second-half penalty saved by Claudio Bravo.

But, in the end, it proved immaterial as Spurs held on to secure their best start to a league campaign since 1960/61, leaving Guardiola to mull over his first league defeat since March.

Joe Allen's close-range finish earned struggling Stoke a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford as Manchester United were made to pay for sloppy finishing.

Record signing Paul Pogba had enough chances to put the game to bed on his own but his wayward finishing, coupled with a fine performance from on-loan Derby goalkeeper Lee Grant, meant United had to wait 69 minutes for substitute Anthony Martial's brilliant opener.

Allen's point-blank finish was scruffier, coming after a David De Gea parry and a deflection off the crossbar, but no less meaningful.

Stoke had lost their last 13 games at this ground, last gathering a point in 1980, but Grant's refusal to buckle on just his second top-flight appearance, coupled with Pogba's wasteful treatment of three gilt-edged chances, cost them dear.

Southampton held Leicester to a battling goalless draw as the Premier League champions continued to stutter.

The hosts needed the frame of the goal and poor finishing to claim a point after Charlie Austin hit a post and wasted a fine second-half chance in front of England caretaker boss Gareth Southgate.

Robert Huth also hit the woodwork for the Foxes but the sluggish hosts again struggled to recapture their Champions League form as they try to balance their European and domestic ambitions.

Arsenal scored a late winner at Burnley - 0 - 1
