Champions League review

Liverpool endured more Champions League frustration in a 1-1 draw with Spartak Moscow on Tuesday night, but not so Spurs who thrashed APOEL Nicosia 3-0 thanks to Harry Kane's hat-trick.

Following a 2-2 draw with Sevilla in which defensive errors and missed opportunities meant for a disappointing night at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp named a strong Liverpool side to face Spartak in Russia.

The hosts went ahead on 23 minutes thanks to a free-kick from Fernando, which Loris Karius will surely feel he should have saved, but Philippe Coutinho made up for his foul which gave away that opportunity with a quality equaliser soon after.

Liverpool were odds-on to win at half-time but, despite dominating the second half, were unable to find a way through.

They came closest in the dying moments, Mo Salah heading straight at substitute goalkeeper Alexander Selikhov who nevertheless did superbly to keep it out.

The result leaves Liverpool two points adrift of Sevilla in Group E, the Spanish side having beaten Maribor 3-0.

In Cyprus, Kane fired Spurs to a convincing win with a 'perfect' hat-trick - one on his left foot, one on his right, before sealing a fine night for Spurs with a headed third on 67 minutes.

Manchester City were given a thorough examination by Shakhtar Donetsk which they came through thanks to a sublime curling strike from Kevin De Bruyne followed by a late second from Raheem Sterling, soon after Sergio Aguero had failed to convert a penalty.

Real Madrid beat Dortmund 3-1, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice after a first-time volley from Gareth Bale put the visitors ahead, while Napoli were much too good for Feyenoord, also winning 3-1 after a late consolation for the Dutch outfit.

Monaco lost 3-0 to Porto, while Besiktas beat Red Bull Leipzig 2-0 in a match slightly held up by partial floodlight failure midway through the second half.
