Talking Were on our way to Wembley

Wycombe Wanderers off to Wembley .. (May 14 2015)

A review of Thursday's League Two play-off action as Wycombe and Southend booked their tickets for a Wembley showdown.

First-half goals by Paul Hayes and Alfie Mawson ensured that Wycombe booked their place in the League Two play-off final with a 2-1 victory over Plymouth that sealed a 5-3 aggregate win.

In a repeat of the first leg, the Chairboys dominated the opening stages and opened up a comfortable lead - only for the Pilgrims to leave them sweating later in the contest.

In the end, substitute Ryan Brunt's backheel was all they had to show for a much-improved second-half display but John Sheridan's men are condemned to another season at this level.

Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth, however, has the chance to complete a wonderful turnaround after saving his side from relegation from the Football League last year when they head to Wembley on May 23.

Michael Timlin might be sporting a headache of a different kind in the morning after firing Southend to Wembley as well.

The midfielder, whose horrific head injury overshadowed the first leg of their play-off semi-final against Stevenage, fittingly scored the goal which secured a 3-1 extra-time victory.

A surprise inclusion and wearing Petr Cech-style headgear after needing 15 stitches in a gaping wound above his eye, Timlin played the full 120 minutes and rounded off a courageous display by wrapping up the win.

The Shrimpers fell behind to Tom Pett's close-range strike and, after Ryan Leonard had equalised, Barry Corr blew the chance to send Southend through when he missed a stoppage-time penalty.

But substitute Stephen McLaughlin nodded them in front in the 108th minute and Timlin added the gloss to send manager Phil Brown back to the scene of his memorable promotion to the Premier League with Hull seven years ago.
