Tuesdays Carabao Cup review (Round 3)
Carabao Cup review: Manchester United lose to Derby on penalties, and Burnley beaten at Burton (September 25, 2018)
A review of Tuesday's action in round three of the Carabao Cup... Results Blackpool 2-0 QPR Bournemouth 3-2 Blackburn Burton 2-1 Burnley Millwall 1-3 Fulham Oxford 0-3 Manchester City Preston 2-2 Middlesbrough (Middlesbrough win on penalties) Wolves 0-0 Leicester (Leicester win on penalties) Wycombe 3-4 Norwich Manchester United 2-2 Derby (Derby win on penalties) West Brom 0-3 Crystal Palace Frank Lampard got one over on his former manager as Derby beat Manchester United on penalties at Old Trafford. Juan Mata had given United an early lead but the Sky Bet Championship side were back on level terms as Harry Wilson, on loan from Liverpool, scored a stunning free-kick (below). Summer signing Jack Marriott scored five minutes from time and Derby looked to be heading into the fourth round draw, but substitute Marouane Fellaini scored an injury-time equaliser for the hosts. It went down to spot-kicks, with the first 15 efforts being successfully converted, but Phil Jones' penalty was saved by Scott Carson. Jamie Allen's late goal saw Burton reach the fourth round of the League Cup for the first time in their history as the League One side came from behind to defeat Burnley 2-1 at the Pirelli Stadium. Kevin Long headed the Premier League strugglers in front just before half time but Liam Boyce equalised and then set up the winning goal for Allen, when Burnley were piling on the pressure. Jake Hesketh should have made the winning margin more comfortable but saw his close-range shot strike the post in injury time. Substitute Callum Wilson headed a dramatic injury-time winner as Bournemouth scraped into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-2 win over Sky Bet Championship side Blackburn. With the tie heading for a penalty shoot-out, the striker rose highest at a corner to spare the Cherries' blushes after they squandered a two-goal lead. They had appeared on course for a straightforward passage to the last 16 of the competition after goals either side of half-time from Junior Stanislas and Jordon Ibe put them in control. But Rovers captain Craig Conway smashed home from distance to halve the deficit, before Adam Armstrong levelled from the spot with 18 minutes remaining to make them sweat. The visitors also had defender Derrick Williams sent off late on for a deliberate handball, moments before Wilson's late intervention.
