Carabao Cup review: Tottenham beat Watford, Arsenal see off Brentford (September 26, 2018)

Dele Alli enjoyed the dream Milton Keynes homecoming as he scored the winning penalty that sent Tottenham past Watford.

Alli, who joined Spurs from MK Dons, returned to his former stomping ground and having drawn his side level in normal time, then sealed a 4-2 penalty shootout win after a lively finish saw the contest end 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Watford had gone in front 39 seconds into the second half through Isaac Success but Alli wiped that advantage out from the spot with 10 minutes to go after being fouled by Christian Kabasele, who was sent off.

Six minutes later Spurs, playing at the home of the League Two outfit because Wembley is unavailable, went in front through Erik Lamela, only for their former player Etienne Capoue to level with a heavily deflected effort and send the tie to penalties.

After Paulo Gazzaniga saved from Capoue and Quina, it was left to Alli to send his side through.

Arsenal survived a second-half rally from Brentford as a Danny Welbeck double proved enough to seal a place in round four.

The Gunners, beaten finalists in this competition last season, were pushed all the way by a much-changed Brentford side but showed enough to advance with a 3-1 win as Welbeck scored twice in the first half to ensure safe progression.

The Championship promotion hopefuls were the better side after the interval and gave themselves a fighting chance of an upset courtesy of a fine Alan Judge free-kick, only for substitute Alexandre Lacazette to secure the win with a stoppage-time effort.

Nottingham Forest hung on to beat Stoke 3-2 in a pulsating tie at the City Ground.

Forest were 3-0 up after 50 minutes as goals from Simon Osborn, Daryl Murphy and Joe Lolley put them firmly in the driving seat, but Benik Afobe pulled a goal back before the Reds were reduced to 10 men when Diogo Goncalves was sent off.

Saido Berahino then set up a frantic last few minutes with a second Stoke goal, but Forest rode out the storm to clinch a place in the fourth round of the competition for the first time in 14 years.

West Ham romped to an 8-0 victory over League Two side Macclesfield with Robert Snodgrass (2), Lucas Perez, Ryan Fredericks and debutant Grady Diangana (2) all scoring their first goals for the club.

Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbonna were also on target as the Hammers registered their first home win of the season and their biggest victory in 35 years.
